Day 21: Love at first site in the city of beautiful people, places, and things...

Friday was our last day in Cambridge which came waaaaay too fast. I felt like I left a little of my heart there because it the perfect city for me and I really didn’t want to leave yet. There was so much more for us to do, I could have easily stayed for another 2 weeks. I really hope that I built bridges during my stay that will lead me back there sometime in the future. It’s a fantastic school and overall just great atmosphere that anyone lucky enough to study there will never want to study…

Day 19: Catching Up

So it’s been a while since I last wrote. I feel like I keep saying that but this time, it’s like really true. This last week has been so busy with studying for a midterm this Friday, taking small day trips here and there, and just trying to enjoy Cambridge for the last few days I’m here. It’s been an adventure, and I’m really disappointed it’s coming to an end, even if I do get to go to the supposedly amazing city of Stockholm.

The day after I last wrote was Friday, and basically that…

Day 13: California is in a drought; London is definitely not

As the days go by and class is getting more intense, it’s hard to try to keep up with the world outside of this program. And so, even though I’ve basically given up on this ‘every day’ blog, my new goal is to write at least every other day, just so I can try to have more time to enjoy myself, but also so I can have more things to write about when I actually do write.

Yesterday and today were two totally different experiences and so much has gone on that it’s all very exciting and also…

Day 11: Finding Motivation

I really can’t believe it’s already been 11 days.

Time keeps going by too fast, and even though I’m trying to enjoy it all, I’m learning that 4 weeks for a class is really intense. It feels like it’s been nonstop for the past 3 days because, well, it basically has been.

These first few days have been split up in almost the same way: breakfast, class, tea break(!), class, lunch, class, tea and coffee break, and then tutoring/”free” time. That “free” time is basically time to try…

Day 9: Sight Hunting and Tourists' Punting

Today was our first day of classes here at Cambridge. We started with a basic overview of genetics and went over some topics that we very fundamental to the rest of the course. Although it was mostly simple, it was so interesting to finally be learning what I’ve been waiting to learn these last 2 years. It was quite embarrassing actually: about an hour into class I got this overwhelming feeling of gratefulness to be sitting in this small room looking out a window into the large courtyard at…

Day 8: The Start of the Program & The Start of my Genetics Adventure

So it’s been a while since I last updated this, but I’ve been so busy with moving and trying to figure last minute details that I’ve had very little downtime to actually sit behind a computer. And most of that very little downtime was spent sleeping anyways!

Okay, recap time: My last few days in London were a lot more lowkey. I visited Kensington Palace, where the royal family with Prince William and Kate live and we toured the old apartments of Queen Victoria and King George III. We…

Day 4: How London Should Feel

Today was definitely my favorite day so far in London. I don’t know if it was me having a good night’s sleep, or an awesome English breakfast to start my day, or that we went to a bunch of places and did things that I really just enjoyed.  All I know is that today I finally felt excited and happy to be where I am. And that was the feeling that I knew I had been missing ever since I got here.

But first I’m going to quickly overview what we did yesterday, because I didn’t have time to…

Day 2: A Different View of London

Today was so much better than yesterday. First of all, I had a full night’s sleep. Second, I got to spend the day with my best friend from high school, Mackenzie, while my uncle was out for the day visiting the Cotswolds. She had been studying abroad in Scotland for the past few weeks and so it was so nice to finally see her again, even if just for a little while. Two of her friends from her program came too, so we all just hung out together having a fun and relaxing day in…

Day 1: I'm so tired, I don't even know how I was able to coherently write this

My excitement to finally be in London should be met with, well, excitement. But as the last few days before my trip quickly came and went in a blur, it became so hard to focus on that excitement when all I really felt were nerves. Was I bringing the right clothes? Should I bring my rain boots? Wait, no, that puts me over the weight limit… etc. I eventually gave up trying to perfectly plan based on what other people told me, and decided to pack for myself (I chose my hair drying over…

Day -17: The Journey Begins

Today marks 17 days until I leave for my trip. As excited as I am – which is like, incomprehensible – it’s hard to believe how fast this first half of summer is going by. It feels like just yesterday I was applying to UC Davis and looking into all their study abroad programs, and now three years later I’m finally embarking on what is most likely going to be the best month and a half of my life.…
